Your gay best friend
The New Gay » Sex and The Shitty:
This is to say nothing about the fact that this movie — which I have gathered the entire plot of from its trailer, never a good sign— features a gay wedding between two men who hate each other, love an all-white color pallette and hired Liza Minelli to sing “Single Ladies.” I’ve hosted orgies that were less stereotypically gay than that. Guys getting fisted...

What now internet?
Steve Jobs is killing LaLa on May 31st. What do I replace it with?
I like to stream albums. I like the immediate gratification of finding an artist and listening to everything by them, when I want, as I want.
Buying music is not so much a “must have”. I do like finding cool playlists by other users, as a means of discovering new music.
A long long time ago, I had a LastFM...

Free Read: Valente's The Days of Flaming...
To tell you the truth, my father wasn’t really that much different after he became a zombie.
My mother just wandered off. I think she always wanted to do that, anyway. Just set off walking down the road and never look back. Just like my father always wanted to stop washing his hair and hunker down in the basement and snarling at everyone he met. He chased me and hollered and hit me before....

Book Review: Judith Ivory's Black Silk
Someone somewhere on the Internet listed Judith Ivory’s Black Silk as one of their personal Best Books Evar! So I decided to give it a shot, even though it doesn’t have Navy SEALs…
Yes. This is one of the best romance novels I have ever read.
Everything you expect from a romance novel is turned on it’s head; everything you think is necessary in a hero/heroine is...

Maureen: I want a show about Hemingway and Castro. Fidel and Ernie.
Me: In my head it’s like Perfect Strangers…only funny. ZING! [This is obviously a joke. Perfect Strangers is hilarious.]
Maureen: [laughs] Yes, exactly. And they too will live in Chicago.
Me: Well, yeah. And Ernest will always wear this
. Cause Chicago is chilly.
I would watch this, if Hugo Chavez...

Where rom-com meets romance novel
Just Wright: “This One-Of-A-Kind Woman Deserves More Than A One-Size-Fits-All Romance”:
Leslie Wright (Queen Latifah) is a physical therapist and die-hard basketball fan who is successful and attractive, yet mysteriously single. Minutes after lamenting this fact, she meets New Jersey Nets star Scott McKnight (Common), who is perfect for her but winds up with her gold-digging childhood...

Not Quite a Lady by Loretta Chase
whatkindofgirl:
I really liked both Darius and Charlotte, and I enjoyed the way Chase mirrored their paternal relationships. They’re pretty cute together. More sentimental than most of her novels, but perhaps that just reflects Charlotte—she’s all emotional and angsty once her secret baby shows up. Yes, this is a secret baby novel. Not the best, but certainly not the worst of those I’ve read....

Treme! Tremendous!
The ladyfriend and I caught up with Treme this past weekend. I ended up watching all four episodes in one sitting.
I love it. LOOOVE it. Even the slightly overblown, soap-boxy, preachy parts (looking at you, John Goodman).
I feel like I am there, with these people, standing right next to them as their lives unfold. Some critics have pointed to an us versus outsiders mentality to the...

– Victoria Janssen: Normative Heterosexuality and the Alpha Male Fantasy
Can I just say, the words NORMATIVE HETEROSEXUALITY are like bear bait to my heart? Some women want jewelry— I want whispers of gender theory and feminist literature.

Series review: The Joe Pitt Casebooks
You should read Charlie Huston’s Joe Pitt books.
If you like violence that is actually violent; anti-heroes; and grimy, inescapable fates for grimy, inescapable characters, you should really read Joe Pitt.
Huston’s tone is neo-noir, pure pulp. I haven’t read any Chandler, but I’ve seen enough parodies of parodies to know Huston hearkens back to the real thing.
In Joe...

books I am in the middle of
I didn’t feel like writing a recap of everything I read in April… Mainly because I’m having a hard time remembering everything I read in April. Some were bad, some were boring, only a few stood out— and those that did deserve a full review.
So here’s what I am currently reading:
Romance I’ve picked up and put down and probably won’t return to, but still...

George Rekers, You are NOT Welcome here. --Mfred
Two days after it was revealed that Family Research Council co-founder and rabid anti-gay activist George Rekers brought a male prostitute on a European vacation, the prostitute has publicly admitted that the pair did, indeed, have sex.

Mike Resnick's The Bride of Frankenstein
Yesterday he sent Igor off to buy a generator. I thought he’d finally realized the need to upgrade the castle. I should have known better. It’s in the basement, where he’s using it for one of his simple-minded experiments that never brings us fame or fortune. He can use the generator’s power to make a dead frog’s leg twitch (as if anyone cares), but he can’t use it to heat this drafty, ugly,...

Other people's reviews-- I'd DNF the sucker
And I did enjoy watching those silly Hollywood Hayley “staff.” Her harried manager, her screen writing personal assistant, her snarling cook, her stuck up stylist and – the hands down winner of the “I’d love to dish with him for a 2 hour long lunch” – her hair dresser, Stefano. Sure, he’s every caricature of the Gay hair dresser but even he admits that as he takes Roni blonde and adds her hair...

Lawyers for and against same-sex marriage in the District outlined their arguments Tuesday before the nine D.C. Court of Appeals judges in one of the latest efforts surrounding same-sex marriages being performed in the District. It was one of the first times all nine judges sat for an initial argument.
Lawyers arguing against allowing the marriages argued that D.C. voters should have been allowed...

Top 10 things Hollywood thinks computers can do
3. You can zoom and enhance any footage
This has long been the staple of the lazy writer (particularly those working for CSI): a security camera or photo is put on a screen, someone asks for zone G4 to be zoomed and enhanced, then as if by magic stunning detail appears from nowhere and the criminal is identified.
For this system to work it either requires every camera and CCTV system to use...

Dear Chely, Welcome. -Mfred
1) It always matters when anyone comes out.
People who have already come out and are surrounded by supportive communities often forget the dark fog of fear and shame and confusion that lives inside the closet. Some people say that coming out is an ethical obligation, and that if all the closeted gay people in all the world climbed up on chairs and jumped off at the same time, the whole earth would...

This man was elected to Congress...
Congressman Duncan was speaking at a Tea Party rally last weekend, and during the Q&A someone asked him if he thinks they should deport the children of illegals born in this country, and this jackass (a democratically elected member of our legislature) said,
“I would have to, yes. And let me tell you why. You can say, ‘You are a mean guy. That’s not a humanitarian thing to do.’ We simply...

Arizona. Officially insane.
Last week, the Arizona House of Representatives passed House Bill 2281, a measure that singles out Chicano and African American studies for banning according to the bill itself which, “prohibits a school district or charter school from including courses or classes that either promote the overthrow of the United States government or promote resentment toward a race or class of people…
“It...
