Mosquita y Mari—the film about the tender love between two Chicana teenagers growing up in Huntington Park, one of the most vibrant immigrant Latino communities in Los Angeles—now has an official trailer.
The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this Saturday. There are five screenings of the film and only one them has tickets available online—so get your tickets ASAP.
I’m really excited because at some point in the future, I will be able to watch this film. Life is grand.

On behalf of all gays and lesbians living in Minnesota, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for our community’s successful efforts to threaten your traditional marriage,” reads the letter from John Medeiros. “We apologize that our selfish requests to marry those we love has cheapened and degraded traditional marriage so much that we caused you to stray from your own holy union for something more cheap and tawdry.

As a modern day reader, I didn’t much like it. Laura, for being the star of the scandalous lesbian plot, fairly disappears from the book for the last half. When she is present, her character is presented as an underwhelming girl-child, always crying or about to cry. Beth’s motivations for wandering in and out of a lesbian romance are explained in the most facile psych 101 terms (she wasn’t loved enough as a child!). Charlie is an odd combination of tender and caveman, having his way in the name of Good & Manly Decision-making whenever the plot requires it.

Things you must do today:
1. Create an account at Whitehouse.gov
2. Sign the Uniting American Families Act petition and get it to Obama’s desk!
This petition calls for the passage of the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) that seeks to add the category of ‘Permanent Partner’ in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
This will allow US citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents to sponsor their same sex partner for immigration benefits to the US in the same way that an opposite sex married couple can.
Currently the category of ‘Spouse’ in the INA is defined as a husband or wife of the opposite sex.
